3rd XI
3rd XI v Garvey
“Talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence wins championships”.

And so after 7 months of hard work, good results and even occasional training the 3rds approached their last match of the season. Lying top of the league and with promotion already in the bag another point was needed to round off the season and take the title. A mid-week game away to a Lisnagarvey team lying in third place and still in with a chance of going up was not the easy end of season fixture you would have selected after a two week lay-off. However most of the players had been ticking over with games for other club teams, especially the 2nds under the new agreement of co-operation and player sharing that has developed in recent weeks. Most regulars were available and keen to play with only “cruiser” (hand injury) and the “skip” (very sore knee) sitting this one out. SOC was unable to play this week leaving an interesting goal-keeper quandary. “Skips” persuasive powers then really shone. He talked the 4th XI captain to start while waiting for “gates” (showing great commitment) to fly in from London and go directly to the match.

Instonians 3rd XI
Well done to Michael Eagleson and his 3rd XI for completing a successful season. Last nights 4-2 win at Lisnagarvey ensured that they will finish the season as Junior 3 champions. Congratulations to all involved.

Details and match report to follow.

Instonians 3rd XI - Junior 3 Champions 2010

Raphoe 3rds v Instonians 3rds

“Ask not what your club can do for you, but what you can do for your club”

On a relatively bright spring morning the combined teams of the 2nds and 3rds (serds!!) made their way north to the hockey outpost of Raphoe. On a day when the 1sts and 4ths had no game only 17 players, a spectator and a bus driver travelled and of these there were two goalkeepers, and three starred second eleven players. The talk on the journey was optimistic, in spite of the lack of numbers, with “skip” noting in discussion with Socrates, the fact the neither of them had been sent off this season! (It was a mystery to me as well).

Instonians 3XI v Kilkeel 3rd XI

“Where the Mountains of Mourne, etc...”

Not the most glamorous of fixtures for this time of the season but nevertheless the 3rds took the field on Friday night at Kilkeel despite paramilitary intervention in Belfast. Various suspicious devices were located in Upper Malone causing the team difficulty in meeting on time at Shaw's Bridge.  With no schoolboys available due to the school taking them away to taste German beer, the 3rds were very grateful for the services of “Gates”, “Gazelle”, “Chalet Boy”, “Dyn” and the prodigal son, “Crouchy”. Following a ‘lets not blow this’ team talk, a discussion about having a part time Manager and still awaiting on “Chalet Boy” arriving, the game started. (apparently “Chalet Boy” got excited at the idea of some sport in the mountains and had spent the afternoon looking for a piste on Slieve Donard!!)

Brian Foy

As you may know by now Brian Foy unfortunately broke his ankle during last Saturdays match and is out for the remainder of the season.

In spite of this it looks likely that he will yet again finish the year as the Club's top goalscorer. Obviously this is a huge loss to the 3rds at this cruical stage of the season. On behalf of all his fellow team-mates we would just like to wish Brian a speedy recovery and look forward to him resuming fitter than ever next year.
